As September 2023 marks my 18th year working at Microsoft, I can't help reflecting on the incredible journey and the valuable lessons it has brought. Among the key insights that have revolutionized my productivity, I discover how lucky I'm to have a well and long sleep daily, over eight hours, also under pressure. But for me, a game-changer for productivity is the transformative power of taking vacations to recharge and rejuvenate.
A game-changer for productivity is the transformative power of taking vacations to recharge and rejuvenate.
Like any seasoned professional working in an organization as large and demanding as Microsoft, it's undeniable that our dedication and commitment to a role have been instrumental in our success. Working for Microsoft often means projects and initiatives move quickly — once we finish one task, we jump to the next one.
Now it is also clear to me that it's essential to take a step back and invest in our most crucial asset: ourselves. A long vacation can be a transformative experience that not only recharges our energy but also enables us to reflect on our work style, identify efficiency leaks, brainstorm potential areas of improvement, and enhance productivity without the need to increase working hours — which is not ideal for our work-life balance.
For me, time for recovery means being completely free from work. It's a period where I can disconnect from all work-related tasks and responsibilities.
Five benefits of the power of long vacations
This article will explore the numerous benefits of taking extended time off to rejuvenate, identify strengths and weaknesses, and align personal growth with professional excellence.
1) Recharging Your Energy
Long vacations are like a breath of fresh air in our fast-paced lives. The demands of being part of a high-performing team can undoubtedly take a toll on our physical and mental well-being. An extended break allows us to disconnect from the daily grind, escape work-related stress, and replenish our energy reserves. Stepping away from our routine and exploring new environments can refresh our minds, positively impacting our work performance upon our return.
2) Reflection and Self-Assessment
During an extended vacation, there is ample time for introspection and self-assessment. As leaders (it is okay if we are managers or individual contributors), evaluating our performance objectively is crucial. Reflect on our achievements, strengths, and weaknesses.
For example, lately, I reviewed my last ten performance reviews, which we call "connect" at Microsoft. Reading my reflection and my manager's comments about my impact, improvement areas, and future development opportunities, I realized that I need to innovate more. In other words, I keep myself in the high-performance quadrant following a similar recipe. I'm not saying this is wrong, but it's something to consider during my reflection.
This reflective process will provide valuable insights into our leadership style, communication skills, and decision-making abilities. Honest self-evaluation enables us to recognize areas where we excel and those that require further attention.
3) Identifying Strengths and Weaknesses
Acknowledging our strengths and weaknesses is a pivotal aspect of personal growth. When we spend time away from our daily responsibilities, we gain clarity on our abilities and areas that need development. Embrace and leverage our strengths to inspire and motivate our team (again, as a manager or team member). Simultaneously, identify our weaknesses not as limitations but as opportunities for growth. Embracing continuous improvement fosters a culture of learning within our team and organization.
4) Areas of Improvement for Enhanced Productivity
According to a recent study from the Harvard Business Review, people taking 1-3 months of sabbaticals reported a positive transformation that translated to benefits for their organizations and the individual.
Long vacations offer the chance to identify areas of improvement that can significantly impact productivity without necessarily increasing working hours.
Assess our managerial skills, team dynamics, task prioritized vs. ROI, and communication techniques. Identify inefficiencies in processes and explore new approaches to streamline workflows. Addressing these areas of improvement can lead to better teamwork, optimized productivity and ultimately contribute to our overall success and, therefore, our team's success.
5) Enhancing Work-Life Balance
After 25 years of professional experience, I learned that work-life balance is essential for long-term success and fulfillment in both personal and professional realms. Taking an extended vacation emphasizes the value of this balance and demonstrates to our team the importance of self-care. By embodying this balance, we set a positive example, encouraging your team members to prioritize their well-being and increasing job satisfaction, loyalty, and productivity.
A good experience occurred a year ago when my manager took a two-month sabbatical time off, and we could keep the business going by distributing his responsibilities through the team. It was a tremendous and unique opportunity to learn more about how he was measured, understand his decision-making framework, and test us (his team) by exposing the unit to senior leadership.
Conclusion
A long vacation is an indulgence and a strategic investment in personal and professional growth. Taking quality time off to recharge, reflect, and identify areas of improvement can significantly impact our overall productivity and well-being.
By understanding our strengths and weaknesses, we can leverage our abilities effectively and work on areas that need development. This approach will lead to a more empowered, motivated, and cohesive team, ultimately driving success in the dynamic world of technology.
Therefore, we need to plan a well-deserved extended break to return with a renewed spirit and an enhanced vision for the role we want to play, how to reach our short-term/long-term goals, and achieve the team and organization commitments plus growth ambitions.
Once back, we should introduce changes in our work style to unlock peak productivity without impacting our personal lives — including the time we dedicate to our family, especially the youngest members since there is no second opportunity to live in the present.
